Transcription notes
Inscription: 'upper left in plate: Rembrandt f / 1638'. Legacy record at https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.9997.html carries identical data. NGA's 'state ii/iii' is the only institutional record found that implies a three-state New Hollstein division; four other institutions say ii/iv. Retrieved via a real browser session; direct HTTP fetch is Cloudflare-blocked. Cross-check: THE SINGLE MOST VALUABLE RECORD IN THIS CENSUS. It is the only one carrying (a) an explicit, named White/Boon number - answering the brief's open question - and (b) a watermark ('Foolscap'). In-plate inscription recorded as 'upper left in plate: Rembrandt f / 1638'. Exhibition history recorded for 1930 (two Rosenwald loan shows) and 1932. NGA object id 9997; the accession number matches Wikidata Q65024742 (P217), which was found independently via SPARQL. API route: None. api.nga.gov returns 404 without a key. Retrieved by rendering the public object page in a browser; curl and WebFetch both receive a Cloudflare HTTP 403 interstitial.
How to read this record
Every field above is transcribed from the holding institution’s own published record, in the institution’s own words. Nothing has been normalised, converted or reconciled — where a record is internally inconsistent, or disagrees with another institution, the inconsistency is preserved, because it is data about the state of cataloguing for this plate rather than noise to be tidied away.
If this record is wrong — and if you work at this institution you will know before we do — please tell us. Corrections are logged with their reason and credited.
