How to read one Rembrandt

Six modules built on a single sheet. Each one starts from a question a reasonable person asks in front of an Old Master print and answers it with the evidence this record actually holds — including, repeatedly, the answer that nobody has established it yet. Nothing here requires a background in art history, and nothing here is simplified to the point of being wrong.

The modules are written to be taken in sequence: each one assumes the vocabulary of the one before it, and the last two depend on the physical evidence introduced in the middle pair. Taken end to end they are about 40 minutes of reading, which is one seminar’s preparation.

Every technical term is defined once in the glossary and linked from wherever it is used, so nothing depends on having read a page you haven’t. The seminar questions at the foot of each module have no answers here on purpose — several of them are genuinely unresolved on this record.
