Carries a historic French verso inscription in graphite that is itself state evidence: 'B. 20 / 1st. etat, le trait du menton fort et av[an]t le retouche / sur la joue droite' - i.e. an early cataloguer read the strong chin line and the absence of retouching on the right cheek as first-state markers, whereas Harvard now catalogues the sheet as ii/iv. Persistent link https://hvrd.art/o/278958. Cross-check: Densest reference and collector-mark record of the census, and the only one with an unambiguous dedicated 'State' field (ii/iv). The verso graphite note in French ('1st. etat, le trait du menton fort et avant le retouche sur la joie droite') is an EARLIER collector's opinion that this is a first state, which Harvard's own cataloguing now supersedes with ii/iv - a useful worked example of annotation vs. current attribution. 'R. 20' is left unexpanded by Harvard; do not silently expand it. Harvard flags: 'This record has been reviewed by the curatorial staff but may be incomplete.'
