How paper tells the time

The plate is dated 1638. How do you find out when the sheet was printed?

The image cannot tell you when an impression was pulled. The paper often can.

A date in the plate — Rembrandt f. 1638 — records when the artist worked the copper. It says nothing at all about when any particular sheet came off the press. Since Rembrandt's plates were being printed well into the nineteenth century, the gap between those two dates can be more than two hundred years.

So how do you close it? You look at the paper, because paper is a manufactured object with a date of manufacture, and the printing cannot predate it.

Hold it up to the light

European paper of this period was made on a wire mould. Dip the mould into pulp, lift, drain, and the fibres settle thinner where they lie over the wires. Held up to the light, the sheet reveals its own construction:

Laid lines — fine, closely spaced lines from the horizontal wires.

Chain lines — the widely spaced lines, usually 20 to 30 mm apart, left by the wires that supported the mould. Their exact spacing is a property of the individual mould. Two sheets with matching chain-line spacing may well have come from the same mould, and therefore from the same mill in the same period.

The watermark — a design bent in wire and sewn onto the mould, appearing as a brighter shape in the sheet. Foolscaps, coats of arms, lilies, basilisks. Moulds wore out and were replaced, so a specific watermark variant was in use for a limited span of years.

Why this matters so much for Rembrandt

Rembrandt's papers have been studied more thoroughly than almost any other artist's, precisely because the question of when an impression was printed is so pressing for a body of work that was reprinted for centuries. Where a watermark can be matched to a documented variant, an impression can be placed within a range of years — sometimes a tight one.

The census on this site records watermarks where the holding institution has published them. The British Museum records a Basilisk on one impression and a Strasbourg lily on another; the National Gallery of Art records a Foolscap; the National Gallery of Victoria records Arms of Ravensburg. Each of those is a thread back to a mill and a period.

The catch

Two of them.

First, a watermark occupies part of a sheet, not all of it. A trimmed impression may carry a fragment, or none. On a sheet the size of this print, the odds are not good.

Second, seeing it requires putting light behind the paper, and that requires a conservator's judgement about handling. This is the point at which a research question becomes a conservation question, and the conservation question wins: the sheet is not handled to satisfy curiosity on a schedule that suits the researcher.

Where the watermark is absent, chain-line spacing remains — measurable across the whole sheet, and rarely removed by trimming. It is a weaker signal, and it is not nothing.
