Transcription notes
Dimension recorded by the museum as 'Plate (sheet trimmed to plate): 13.8 x 10.5 cm'. No state given. NOTE: the record's 'Hollstein 9' appears anomalous against every other institution's 'Hollstein 20'; transcribed as printed, not corrected. Cross-check: Catalogued under a shortened title, but Bartsch 20 + New Hollstein 31.170 + date 1638 make the identification secure. INTERNAL INCONSISTENCY: Princeton's 'Reference Numbers' line (Biorklund and Barnard 38, Hind 156, Munz 22, New Hollstein 31.170, Hollstein 9) disagrees with its own bibliography, which cites Biorklund and Barnard no. 47, Hollstein no. 129, Munz no. 71 and New Hollstein no. 236 p. 144. Only Bartsch 20 and New Hollstein 170 are stable across the record. Also records the largest plate measurement in the census (138 mm), 2-3 mm above every other institution.
How to read this record
Every field above is transcribed from the holding institution’s own published record, in the institution’s own words. Nothing has been normalised, converted or reconciled — where a record is internally inconsistent, or disagrees with another institution, the inconsistency is preserved, because it is data about the state of cataloguing for this plate rather than noise to be tidied away.
If this record is wrong — and if you work at this institution you will know before we do — please tell us. Corrections are logged with their reason and credited.
