Rights and licensing

All descriptive metadata produced by this project — the object record, the census, the provenance events, the research questions, the bibliography — is released under CC0 1.0, which is to say into the public domain. Take it, aggregate it, correct it, build on it. No attribution is required, though it is appreciated and it helps others trace an error back to its source.

This includes the API, the JSON-LD, the CSV exports and the IIIF manifest.

Images of NP-RMB-001

There are none yet. The underlying work — Rembrandt's print — has been in the public domain for centuries. Photographs of it do not exist. When they are made, each will carry its own stated licence on the record, and the intention is the most open licence the photographer will agree to.

Comparator images from other collections

Images of other impressions belong to the institutions that made them and are governed by those institutions' terms, which vary considerably: some are CC0, some are Public Domain Mark, some are restricted to non-commercial use, and some cannot be reproduced at all. Every census record states the rights position as the holding institution words it, and links to the institution's own page. Where an institution's terms do not permit reproduction, this project links rather than copies.

If you are an institution and we have got your rights statement wrong, please tell us — it will be fixed the same day.

Contributions

By submitting a correction or evidence you confirm you have the right to share it, and you agree that the factual content may be incorporated into the record under CC0 so that the record stays reusable. You keep the copyright in any substantial text or image you supply, and the licence you grant for those is recorded with the contribution.
