The V&A's stated 'First state' conflicts with the ~140 mm sheet being larger than the plate; the record gives height 14.2 cm and width 11 cm 'trimmed to', so this is the sheet. Cross-check: V&A system number O1023205. Retrieved from the V&A open API (no key required) - an API not named in the brief, added opportunistically. No catalogue reference field is returned. A web-search snippet described this impression as a 'first state'; the API record contains no state field, so state is left null. Dimension qualifier is 'trimmed to', so 142 x 110 mm is the trimmed sheet."

Persistent link https://hvrd.art/o/278958. Cross-check: Densest reference and collector-mark record of the census, and the only one with an unambiguous dedicated 'State' field (ii/iv). The verso graphite note in French ('1st. etat, le trait du menton fort et avant le retouche sur la joie droite') is an EARLIER collector's opinion that this is a first state, which Harvard's own cataloguing now supersedes with ii/iv - a useful worked example of annotation vs. current attribution. 'R. 20' is left unexpanded by Harvard; do not silently expand it. Harvard flags: 'This record has been reviewed by the curatorial staff but may be incomplete.' The object was discovered by rendering the JS search UI at https://harvardartmuseums.org/collections?q=velvet+cap+with+plume in a browser to obtain object id 278958, then retrieving the server-rendered object page over plain HTTP."

Only Bartsch 20 and New Hollstein 170 are stable across the record. Also records the largest plate measurement in the census (138 mm), 2-3 mm above every other institution."
